The general construction trades' Apprenticeship Training Programs provide all-inclusive training and education to individuals entering the construction trades.  In addition, each trade offers a series of journey worker upgrading classes.  BCANJ members serve as management trustees on these apprenticeship training funds.  Association staff works with the apprenticeship training funds to develop curricula that meet the needs of the construction industry.

Build Up! Tool Kits are used as a means of acquainting fifth grade students with the world of construction.  With the support of our members who sponsor these kits at a cost of $199 each, BCANJ has been able to place hundreds of units with elementary schools throughout the state.

Our ongoing efforts to showcase Careers in Construction has been demonstrated by participation at numerous career fairs, ranging from middle school programs to high school and adult education audiences.  Inroads are forged through participation at workshops and conventions geared toward the educational community.  BCANJ is also attentive to governmental initiatives that fund and issue grants to organizations that provide outreach and life skill enhancement for female and minority applicants interested in construction apprenticeship programs.

BCANJ, with grant funding from the New Jersey Department of Labor, developed a Construction Careers Kit that includes a Career Resource Manual containing relevant career data about each of the five general construction trades.  The Kit also holds brochures for students and posters that can be placed around the school.  A website entitled www.chooseconstruction.org was developed as well.  Kits were distributed to career counselors throughout the state.

Construction Industry Career Day features exhibits and demonstrations by members of the building trades in New Jersey, four-year colleges, and other organizations involved in the construction industry.  BCANJ has spearheaded this event since 2001 to increase awareness among educators, parents and young men and women that construction is a safe, creative and productive career that opens the door to personal growth, fulfillment and economic success.  To learn more information about Construction Industry Career Day,  please visit the website at www.cicdnj.org.

BCANJ successfully recruits members and union apprenticeship training centers to help learning institutions and construction related consortiums in providing Jobsite and Facility Tours.  These tours allow students and educators to gain a better understanding of the industry.

The New Jersey State Building & Construction Trades Council has received funding from the State of New Jersey to implement a statewide Helmets to Hardhats program (H2H). BCANJ will serve as a consortium partner on this most important initiative. The consortium has been charged with advising on outreach and recruitment, assisting with developing program promotion strategies, assessment of participant progress, and collectively addressing any participant retention problems or barriers to success.
